Since many new players seem to be confused about these things, I decided to post a quick guide.
First off, what are you seeing on your screen?
At the top left there are two bars. One is red, and one is blue.
Red: Red is your health. It's the same colour as usual, so many of you will be used to this.
Blue: Blue is mana. This isn't a basic thing in Minecraft. It's used to cast spells, as you might expect. You can increase the regeneration rate of your mana by buying Channeling skills.
Now, down in the bottom-center of your screen you will see another box with some things in it:
In the middle we have the letters "SP:" and a number: SP stands for skill points. This is essentially the current potential you have for learning skills.
When you purchase a skill you WILL have to pay the number of skill points that is indicated on the sign.
Grey: This is the bar to the left of the "SP:" counter. You will see nothing but the background of the display box until you actually put armour on. As you put more pieces of armour on, or put on better pieces, this bar will increase. This indicates the amount of protection you will receive from damage.
A small addition to the explanation of SP - [glow=red,2,300]skills cost both SP and Crowns![/glow]
Green: The green bar you see to the right of the "SP:" counter is your hunger bar. This works similar to stamina in that your health will not regenerate if this bar is not full, and you will not be able to sprint if you don't at least have (around) 1/4th of the bar filled. This bar can be filled back up with food, just like in basic Minecraft.
TL;DR?
RED: HEALTH
BLUE: MANA
SP: SKILL POINTS
GREY: ARMOUR/PROTECTION
GREEN: STAMINA/FOOD
Alright, now that we know what we're looking at..
Crowns: Crowns are the currency used in Talarra. You will need these. They are used to buy skills (along with SP), items, and services. Some people accept goods in exchange for other goods (bartering) or services, but Crowns are the best thing to rely on.
Skills: Skills cover a broad range of things and can be bought to enhance mining yield for certain minerals/gems, gather more wood/gather it faster, and even to increase your damage with certain weapons.
Weapon Skills: These skills increase the damage you do with certain weapons. These come in multiple levels. Most weapons have: Basic, Trained, Advanced, Professional. They are in order from least beneficial to most.
Examples are: Basic Dagger, Advanced Axe, Professional Unarmed..
Defense Skills: These skills increase your defensive capabilities. Some do this by increasing your dodge rate, others simply decrease the over-all damage you take by a percentage. They can be invaluable in a fight.
Examples are: Basic Dodge, Stone Skin..
Crafting Skills: There are a great variety of different types of crafting skills. Some allow you to craft goods out of mined items, some allow you to create wooden goods, etc.
Examples are: Iron Armour Crafting, Fence Making, Iron Door Crafting..
Magical Skills: These can accomplish several different roles. Some skills are used for healing, some for destruction. These are usually quite expensive because of their power and the intellect required to learn such a thing.
Examples are: Basic Fireball, Mass Heal, Full Heal..
Harvesting Skills: These increase the amount of resources you harvest, how often you harvest them, or a combination of both. There are several levels of these skills. When you start, if you have no skill in mining diamond you will have a fifty (50%) chance of getting a single diamond from it. When you buy the Diamond Mining skill your chance of getting a diamond from a diamond ore block is increased to one hundred percent (100%). Advanced Diamond Mining further adds to your mining experience by giving you the potential to get double or triple the normal drop, along with giving a 100% drop rate for at least one.
Examples are: Diamond Mining, Logging, Quarrying..
Now that we're past skills I'll explain housing and such.
You need a home in Talarra. Without one you will have no good place to store your goods or rest your head after a day of hard work. Some may think East Sablewood is an appropriate place, but it gets reset regularly, so unless you're keen on losing all your stuff or are simply storing it there for a day or two.. Don't put it there.
Houses come in many shapes, sizes, colours, materials, and places. Choose wisely before you decide to rent or buy a home! When you have chosen the appropriate home, ask around about who the Mayor of that region is. After you find out who it is, contact the person and set up a meeting with them and get permission to rent/buy the home. After you do this you may have to ask a moderator or administrator to cuboid your home so that you can edit it if the Mayor is not able to contact one for you.
Living in a region grants you citizenship rights and allows you to vote in elections and the like.
Remember to pay your rent! If you don't the Mayor of that region may get tired of waiting for payment and evict you! If you can't contact the Mayor in-game, post on the forums about it!
As DreXav reminded me:
Please mention that after agreeing with the Mayor upon the rental/purchase, The player must post their rental or purchase on the permit forum using Carlitosd's template or similar.
Cheers,
~D~
To address several requests and suggestions for a list of commands I will shamelessly hijack Sync's previous command thread (with a bit of editing) and add my own explanations in a separate space here:
never worked doesn't work (Rest it's soul). I figured I might as well list the commands in game since I see new people ask "HOW DO I TALK?!" or "WHY CAN'T I GET OUT OF THIS HOLE!" and "WHAT ARE MY SKILLS?!".
This is for you my fellow newbs.
Out of Character.
/ch ooc: This chat channel is used to talk to everyone on a global scale. Whether it be about what you ate last night, what you will eat today, or what you are eating right now. This is where you type it.
/ch who: This command shows you who is currently in the channel you are logged into.
/tell *name* *message*: This command sends a private message to the indicated user. Admins can still read what you type, though!
In character.
/ch Whisper: This chat channel is used IC (In Character) when you are in a area with large amounts of people and you want to say something you don't want them to hear, get close to the person you want to speak to and use this channel. Now you don't have to be afraid to talk about your girlfriend.
/ch Talk: This chat channel is used for normal speech, when you need to ask the guy next to your buddy to pass your beer. This is the chat channel you want to use. Also good for speaking to children!
/ch Shout: THIS CHAT CHANNEL IS USED TO TALK REALLY LOUD! YOU KNOW THAT MOMENT WHEN YOU STUB YOUR TOE AND EVERYONE CAN HEAR IT WITHIN 50 MILES?! THIS IS WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR!
Leaving Channels.
/ch leave name Sick of listening newbs rant on and on and on about how they are dying from hunger? Well you don't have to listen to them anymore!
Miscellaneous Commands.
/cast: LIGHTNING BOLT!.... LIGHTNING BOLT!..... LIGHTNING BOLT! Just kidding, FIREBALL!... FIREBALL!... FIREBALL!...

/money pay name amount : Are you sick of your land lord bothering you every few seconds? Well don't worry! You can keep your house by using this command to pay the character you want! *note* This command only works with the Characters Minecraft name.

/playerinfo Name: This command work's exactly the same way as /profile but instead you get the player's info. Hmmm, I wonder what her measurements are..
/Skills: This command show's the characters individual skills. Oohhhh, look at that. I'm good at pole dancing!
/GetPos: Where am I? With this command you can tell your EXACT location, a bunch of numbers never felt so comforting.

/help: This commandnever has functioned no longer functions
*Please note that I don't have access to all the commands and there is a large amount of them missing from this list.. I just wanted to help out the people that have no idea where to start.
CHEERS!
Refer to this key for the meanings of the letters below:
a= player's Minecraft user name, NOT their overhead name
b= channel name
c= the name of a spell you wish to cast it must have no spaces. "/cast massheal" works whereas "/cast mass heal" does not.
d= the message you wish to send
e= the amount of money you wish to pay
/help - Asking for help from the console is too easy! You have to come to my thread and look the commands up.
/who - This command shows you who is on the server at the moment. It even works on those sneaky administrators and moderators that are come in under the radar.
/pos or /getpos - This gives you the name of the world you are in and the coordinates at which you are currently.
/money - This command shows you how many Crowns you have.
/money pay a e - Need to pay your rent, or buy some things from another player? This command will allow you to select a person or region you wish to give some Crowns to and send however many you want to them. (Assuming you have the amount specified.)
/skills - This command shows you a list of the skills you have knowledge of in several different categories.
/profile - This will show your background and how many SP you have.
/playerinfo a - This handy command works the same way that "/profile" does, but you use it on other people.
/ch b - This has two functions. It allows you to join a channel for the first time, and once you have already joined the channel you can use it to switch between which channel you wish to speak in.
/ch leave b - Want to leave a channel? Use this.
/cast c - This allows you to cast spells. It's a good idea to hot-key any spells you use a lot.
/r d - This is used as a quick response function if someone has already sent you a private message using "/tell". It sends a message to the LAST PERSON that messaged you.
/tell a - This command is used to send private messages to certain players.
/afk - It's practically useless, but it sets your status as away from your keyboard.
/kill - Useful if you're stuck, this command allows you to kill yourself.
Also, here is FearlessKing's guide to making hot-keys and such:
What you will need:
1. Updated spoutcraft
2. A keyboard
First, open up Talarra
Hit escape and chose "options".
Chose "controls" and click on "add shortcut"
Type in name (this is what it will appear as in the control menu), the hotkey, and the command, spell, or something your character says often.
For hotkeys I like to use the numberpad. It looks like this:
For my chat channels I use 7-9. 7 is /ch ooc, 8 is /ch talk, and 9 is /ch whisper
To quickly check my wallet I hotkeyed /money to the minus key:
To quickly check my profile I hotkeyed /profile to the plus key:
I recommend for 1-6 spells for mages or roleplay things to say for anyone:
I personally have 1 as *grunts*, 2 as *growls*, 3 as *roars*, 4 as *pushes past*, and 5 as me yelling MAGES!!!! (Khargul has a history with getting lit on fire).
Again you can set up hotkeys for any open key on the keyboard (but things will pop up as you type). Enjoy!
I like to use the numberpad for my hotkeys.
That's it for now, folks. I'm going to retreat into my grotto deep in the swamp. Feel free to contact me in-game or send me a PM here on the forums if you have any questions. I'm on most all the time so I should respond within a few hours!
